Weather alert on snowfall, rains issued

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for rain and snowfall in Uttarakhand on January 23.

While an orange alert was issued for Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts, Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, Pauri, Almora, and Nainital districts were put under yellow alert, an official statement said on Thursday.

In view of the alert, the Disaster Management Department has initiated precautionary measures, it said.

Taking the Meteorological Department’s warning seriously, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a review meeting on Wednesday with the District Disaster Management Officers and officials of all the relevant departments. The meeting thoroughly reviewed the districts’ preparedness for the expected rain, snowfall, frost, cold wave, and the resulting conditions, and directed them to ensure advance preparedness to deal with any emergency.

Secretary Disaster Management department Vinod Suman directed all districts to exercise extreme caution during the expected inclement weather and to put all implementing agencies on alert. Particularly, the police, health, public works, electricity, drinking water, animal husbandry, and municipal departments were instructed to be prepared.

Meanwhile, IMD on Thursday said due to an intense Western disturbance heavy rainfall and snowfall accompanied with Hailstorm, lightning & gusty winds likely at isolated places over Western Himalayan region on 22nd & 23rd January, 2026. Light to moderate rainfall also likely at a few places over the plains of northwest India during the same period.
