A woman was strangled by her landlord after she resisted rape attempt in Kichcha area of Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, police said on Thursday.
The main accused Amit Singh has been arrested while his younger brother Sumit Singh, who helped him in disposing of the body, is still at large.
“The murder of Sarishti Sharma was solved in a short period after the FIR was filed by her cousin. We have launched all out efforts to nab Sumit also,” SSP Udhamsingh Nagar Manikant Mishra said.
Giving details of the incident, Mishra said Sharma was very close to Amit’s mother. On Nov 4 Amit asked Sarishti to cook food for him as his mother was away. As other family members were also away, Amit took the advantage and tried to rape Sarishti. However, Sarishti forcefully resisted the rape attempt and tried to raise an alarm.
As Sarishti started crying loudly, Amit strangled her. He later pleaded his younger brother Sumit to help him in disposing the body. The two brothers later threw the body in a nearby nullah in Kichcha area and came back home.
As Sarishti was not traceable, her cousin filed a police complaint in Kichcha police station. During investigations, Amit was brought to police station. During the rigorous interrorations, Amit revealed that he murdered Sarishti because she started crying loudly when he tried to rape her.
A postmortem of the body is being conducted, the SSP said.
