INDIA bloc meets President Murmu, Rahul Gandhi vows to submit ‘mountain of evidence’ on vote theft

Leaders of INDIA bloc on Friday met President Droupadi Murmu and sought her intervention over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with Rahul Gandhi saying the opposition would submit a “mountain” of evidence to substantiate its charge of vote theft.

The meeting followed several days of protests by opposition MPs against the Election Commission. The bloc has accused the poll body of facilitating “vote chori” (vote theft) through the revision of voter lists and demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Reacting to the meeting in a Facebook post, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said he was “shocked” that the President had not denied the allegation of vote theft and had instead asked the opposition to provide evidence.

“We will bring her a mountain of it. The INDIA bloc will gladly submit every piece of evidence before her,” Gandhi said, adding that the opposition welcomed her assurance that she would examine the matter and take action.

The opposition delegation, which included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee and others, Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders, submitted a memorandum outlining its concerns over the voter-roll revision and the functioning of the Election Commission.

The bloc has demanded Kumar’s resignation, suspension of the SIR exercise and restoration of names it claims were deleted from electoral rolls. It has also called for changes to the legal framework governing election commissioners.

Earlier, Gandhi led opposition MPs in a march from Parliament towards Rashtrapati Bhavan. Police stopped them at Vijay Chowk, where the MPs staged a protest before a delegation proceeded to meet the President.

The Election Commission has defended its procedures, while the opposition maintains that the revision process raises serious questions about electoral transparency and democratic accountability.

The meeting marks a fresh escalation in the INDIA bloc’s campaign, with Gandhi indicating that the opposition intends to place its evidence before the President.
