Security tightens in Delhi ahead of CJP protest

Security has been tightened across the national capital ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) proposed demonstration on Saturday, October 10 which is likely to disrupt business activity, public transport and educational institutions in Delhi.

CJP is seeking resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar on the SIR issue with its chief Abhijeet Dipke appealing to everyone to hold peaceful demonstration. “I may be arrested tomorrow. But I want everyone to hold protest peacefully,” Dipke said in a message through social media.

The New Delhi Traders Association has advised shops, offices, restaurants and other commercial establishments in Connaught Place (CP) to remain closed on Saturday, citing the risk of possible violence, traffic disruption and damage to property. The advisory has added to concerns among traders in the heart of the capital.

Several schools and colleges have shifted classes online, postponed examinations or rescheduled campus activities amid extensive barricading and anticipated restrictions on movement. A couple of schools, for instance, have decided to conduct online classes for Saturday. Some colleges have also deferred examinations.

The proposed protest is centred on demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition groups have accused the Election Commission of facilitating vote theft, while the poll body has defended its procedures.

Delhi Police has stepped up security and outreach ahead of the demonstration. Reports said police had denied permission for the proposed gathering at Jantar Mantar, citing law-and-order concerns. Authorities are also preparing for traffic diversions and restrictions around central Delhi.

The security arrangements include restrictions at several Metro stations and cancellations of some trains serving New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations. Retail liquor outlets have also been ordered to remain closed as part of precautionary measures, according to media reports.

The proposed demonstration comes amid a wider political confrontation over the SIR exercise and allegations of large-scale deletions from electoral rolls. CJP and other groups are seeking accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner, making Saturday’s protest a major law-and-order challenge for the capital.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, follow official advisories and plan their journeys in advance.
