With the war escalating in the Middle East, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late leader Ali Khamenei, has been chosen as the new supreme leader of Iran, media reports said on Monday.
Members of the clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s top authority said on Sunday that Mojtaba Khamenei had been elected through what they described as a “decisive vote”. The assembly urged citizens to unite behind the new leadership at a difficult time for the country.
Iranian institutions and politicians, from the foreign ministry to lawmakers, issued statements expressing their allegiance to the country’s new supreme leader as the war entered its 10th day and fresh missile and drone strikes reverberated across the Middle East. Iran also tried to send a signal to the US and Israel that it would continue to fight relentlessly.
Mojtaba’s father, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was killed in one of the first strikes launched against Tehran in the very beginning.
Meanwhile, both Iran and Israel claimed that they have launched new strikes against each other.
Plumes of smoke continued billowed in parts of Iran as oil depots in Tehran were engulfed in fire after being hit by intense aerial bombardment overnight. Multiple videos on social media platforms captured the harrowing scenes – with bright orange-yellow flames lighting up dark skies.
