Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her 29th birthday with a historic Asian Games gold medal, defeating China’s Ziyi Bao 5-0 in the women’s 75kg final on Friday.
Lovlina’s triumph made her only the second Indian woman boxer to win an Asian Games gold, after legendary MC Mary Kom, who clinched the 51kg title at the 2014 Incheon Games.
The Indian produced a composed performance against Bao, edging the opening round 3-2 before taking the second 4-1. She maintained her control in the final round to complete a unanimous 5-0 victory.
The gold was particularly significant for Lovlina, who had won silver in the same category at the Hangzhou Asian Games after losing to China’s Li Qian in the final. Her victory in Aichi-Nagoya therefore improved her medal from silver to gold.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist had earlier secured a place in the final by beating Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely fought semifinal. She had thus become the first Indian woman boxer to reach back-to-back Asian Games finals.
For Lovlina, the Asian Games title capped a memorable birthday, adding another major international achievement to her Olympic and world championship medals.
