India enjoyed a spectacular golden Friday at the Asian Games, winning five gold medals across archery, boxing and wrestling to surge to fifth place in the overall medal standings.
The golden rush began with the women’s recurve archery team, as Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod defeated South Korea 5-3 to win India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the event.
Boxing then produced three more golds. Lovlina Borgohain defeated China’s Bao Ziyi in the women’s 75kg final on her birthday, while Parveen Hooda clinched the women’s 65kg title. Ankush Panghal completed the boxing sweep by winning the men’s 80kg gold.
The fifth gold came from wrestling, where Sujeet Kalkal won the men’s freestyle 65kg title, ending India’s wait for a wrestling gold at the Games.
The five-gold haul lifted India to 15 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals — 75 medals overall — taking it to fifth place in the medal table, ahead of Thailand.
It was a particularly memorable day for Indian boxing, with three gold medals, while the women’s recurve team created history and Sujeet Kalkal added the wrestling gold.
India’s spectacular Friday has provided a major boost to its medal campaign as the Aichi-Nagoya Games enter their final stages.
