The Uttarakhand police on Thursday said it has decided to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the suicide of farmer Sukhwant Singh, who had alleged that he was duped of Rs 4 crore in a fraudulent real estate deal in Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarakhand recently.

The SIT will be headed by Inspector General (Law and Order) Nilesh Anand Bharne, a statement issued by the police headquarters said.

In addition to the SIT probe, 12 police personnel who were posted at the ITI police station and Paiga police outpost in Kashipur have been transferred with immediate effect from the Kumaon region to Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts in the Garhwal region.

Sukhwant Singh (40), a resident of Paiga village in Kashipur, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in a hotel room in Haldwani, Nainital district, in the early hours of January 11. Before committing suicide, Singh had posted a video on social media alleging that he had been cheated of approximately Rs 4 crore in a land deal and that the police had not taken any action on his complaint, which led him to take this extreme step.

Besides Bharne, other members of the SIT include Champawat Superintendent of Police Ajay Ganpati, Tanakpur Circle Officer Vandana Verma, Inspector Diwan Singh Bisht and Sub-Inspector Manish Khatri, both posted in Champawat.

The SIT has been instructed to conduct a detailed examination of the video of the deceased circulating on social media and the allegations made by him in his email complaint against local individuals of Udham Singh Nagar district and the officers and personnel of the district police, and to take appropriate legal action.

Earlier, on January 12, Senior Superintendent of Police Manikant Mishra of Udham Singh Nagar district had suspended Sub-Inspector Kundan Singh Rautela, the station house officer of Police Kotwali ITI, and Sub-Inspector Prakash Bisht and transferred all 10 police personnel posted at the Paiga police outpost to the police lines.
