Snowfall in Kedarnath, weather to remain wet till May 8 in north India

Higher reaches of Uttarakhand including Kedarnath experienced snowfall as thunderstorms continued to hit several other areas of Uttarakhand on Monday.

Pilgrimage to Kedarnath was paused several times as heavy snowfall hit the shrine areas intermittently. Despite the bad weather conditions, the pilgrims continued to throng Kedarnath temple chanting Har Har Mahadev slogans. Nearly 19500 pilgrims offered prayers at Kedarnath during the past 24 hours, top officials said.

Over 3.27 lakh pilgrims have visited Kedarnath so far since the portal of the shrine reopened on April 22.

Meanwhile, the authorities have appealed to pilgrims to make adequate arrangements of warm clothes, umbrellas, raincoats and jackets in view of inclement weather condition prevailing in the next few days.

The met centre again issued a warning saying thunderstorm accompanied with lightning / Hail/ intense to very intense spell of rain/ gusty winds (speed 40-50 Kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi (Gangotri and Yamunotri), Rudraprayag (Kedarnath), Chamoli (Badrinath), Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on Tuesday also.

In Dehradun, weather will remain partly cloudy with chances of light rain/thunderstorm accompanied with lightning /gusty wind (30-40 kmph) in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31°C and 19°C, the met centre said.

IMD said scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 30-50 kmph) likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh during 04th-06th May; and Uttarakhand during 04th-08th May.
