This domestic help has scripted new chapter in India

The victory of Kalita Majhi a 37 year old domestic help, in the West Bengal Assembly elections is a remarkable story of political change and social mobility in new India.

Majhi, a BJP candidate, has won the assembly election at a time when the party achieved a historic breakthrough storming to power for the first time in West Bengal. The same Bengal which gave India its most precious gem Subhas Chandra Bose.

Majhi defeated TMC’s Shyama Prasanna Lohar by 12,535 votes.  This was definitely a vote for a change in all aspects.

Majhi’s journey is particularly inspiring because of her humble background. Before entering politics, she worked as a domestic help for more than two decades, earning a modest income and supporting her family through hard labour. Her rise from working in households to becoming an MLA defines the new thought that leadership can emerge from the grassroots. It also highlights the increasing participation of marginalized sections of society in mainstream politics.

Majhi’s victory from the Ausgram (SC) reserved constituency reflected strong local support and the broader political wave in favour of the BJP. Her success was part of a larger electoral shift, as the BJP formed its first-ever government in West Bengal, ending years of dominance by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC.

“Majhi’s victory is not only political but also symbolic. It represents the aspirations of ordinary citizens who seek better representation and governance. Her candidature itself drew attention because it broke stereotypes about who can enter politics,” said Kishore Upadhyaya, a BJP MLA from Uttarakhand.

As an MLA, Majhi is now expected to address local development issues, improve infrastructure, and work towards social welfare in her constituency. Her performance will be closely watched as a test of how effectively grassroots leaders can translate personal struggles into public service.
