BJP grabbed power for the first time in West Bengal and retained it in Assam but superstar Vijay’s TVK sprang a surprise emerging as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu where results threw a hung assembly.
In Kerala, Congress-led UDF stormed to power with a landslide victory.
Reacting to the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing dhoti and kurta, said the NDA has formed governments in more than 20 states in India and that with the West Bengal election verdict, the lotus is blooming from Gangotri to Gangasagar now.
As the counting of votes for the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala ended, the results in four crucial states showed except Assam, the people voted for change in other three states.
In West Bengal, the long-standing dominance of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) has waned considerably with the BJP making significant inroads and winning 206 seats out of the total 294 seats. TMC could win only 80 seats in the final round.
In Tamil Nadu, a dramatic shift was visible with superstar Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as a powerful new player, disrupting the traditional DMK–AIADMK bipolar politics. Though TVK won 108 seats, the results produced a hung assembly. Proving the exit polls wrong, DMK which could win only 59 seats was in second position with AIADMK being in third position winning 47 seats in Tamil Nadur where the assembly election was held for 223 seats out of 234.
The BJP has strengthened its position in Assam considerably where it scored a hattrick with a landslide victory riding the crest of a wave of the growing popularity of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. BJP led alliance won 102 seats. Congress gave its worst performance in Assam bagging only 19 seats in the House of 126.
Kerala, traditionally known for alternating power change between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), is witnessing a total rejection of the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan (CPI-M) this time. UDF won 98 seats pushing LDF to 35 in the 140 member assembly. BJP managed to win three seats only. Significantly, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a partner of Congress, won 22 seats.
Experts said the elections also demonstrated the growing importance of new voters and changing campaign styles. A large number of first-time voters and increased use of digital campaigning have influenced electoral strategies. “Political parties are focusing more on social media outreach, targeted messaging, and personality-driven campaigns rather than traditional mass mobilization,” said a journalist.
