The theft of an iPhone from a rented house in the Clement Town area in Dehradun took a fresh turn after the family of the owner received a message from an unidentified person asking for the password of the stolen phone.

The family subsequently approached the Clement Town police, prompting the police to intensify efforts to trace the phone and identify those behind the theft.

CO Sadar Ankit Kandari said the iPhone belongs to Saksham Negi and that a complaint was received on September 13. The police immediately blocked the phone and put it under surveillance, he said.

“After the complaint was received on September 13, the police immediately blocked the phone and put it under surveillance. Our teams are working to trace the culprits,” Kandari said.

He said Saksham’s relatives later approached the Clement Town police after receiving a message from an unidentified person demanding the password of the iPhone.

“We have taken the number of the person who demanded the password. The number has also been put under surveillance and the matter is being investigated,” Kandari said.

Police are investigating whether the person seeking the password is connected to the theft or has access to the stolen phone. Police teams have also raided some suspected hideouts in an effort to recover the device and nab the thieves.
