Two Uttarakhand police sub-inspectors were suspended on Monday and 10 other police personnel were transferred to the police lines after a farmer from Kashipur area in Kumaon region committed suicide alleging that he was duped of Rs 4 crore in a fraudulent real estate deal.

Sukhwant Singh (40) a resident of Paiga village in Kashipur, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at a hotel in Haldwani early Sunday morning. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had already ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manikant Mishra said Sub-Inspector Kundan Singh Rautela, the station house officer of Police Station ITI, and Sub-Inspector Prakash Bisht have been suspended with immediate effect. Departmental disciplinary action has also been proposed against the two police officials.

Besides the two police officials, the entire 10 police personnel posted at Paiga police post under Police Station ITI has been transferred to the police lines.

The SSP said that negligence, insensitivity, or dereliction of duty at any level will not be tolerated in the district.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Sukhwant Singh had been under mental stress for a long time for allegedly losing Rs 4 crore in the fraudulent land deal. According to police, Singh was accompanied in the hotel room by his wife Pradeep Kaur (40) and son Gurshej Singh (14). Kaur revealed during interrogation that she suddenly woke up at around 3 a.m. after being hit on the head by her husband. She said she immediately woke her son and ran out of the room to seek help from the hotel reception. As soon as she left the room, Singh locked the door from inside, and then she heard a gunshot.

When police opened the door, Singh was lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC stated that a post-mortem examination of the body was conducted by a panel of doctors and the videography was also done. He added that forensic evidence has also been collected from the scene.

Manjunath stated that before the incident, the deceased had posted a video on social media. In the viral video, Singh accused some people of duping him of Rs 4 crore in the fraudulent land deal.

In Dehradun, the Congress party described the farmer’s suicide as a direct result of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s “misgovernance and the failure” of the police administration. Senior Congress leader Amarjeet Singh said in a statement, “A farmer was defrauded of crores of rupees in the name of land, but despite complaints, the police took no action. The indifference of the system took the life of a farmer.”
