Uttarakhand is witnessing an average increase of 24-fold in the marriage registration per day since Jan 27, 2025 when the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was implemented.
In the six-month period starting from January 27, 2025, when the UCC was implemented in the hill state, to July 2025, the number of marriage registrations has touched an astonishing figure of three lakh because of the mandatory clause.
In contrast, under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2010, a total of 330,064 marriage registrations were recorded during the 15-year period between 2010 and 2025. Looking at the daily average, only 67 marriage registrations were recorded per day under the old act while this number has increased to 1634 per day after the implementation of the UCC, an official statement claimed.
“Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Since the enactment of this law, there has been a significant increase in awareness among the general public regarding the marriage registration. Statistics show a 24-fold increase in the average daily number of marriage registrations compared to the previous act,” the statement said.
Chief Minister Dhami had pledged to implement the UCC in Uttarakhand during the 2022 assembly elections. In his very first cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dhami decided to implement the UCC in the state. After completing all formalities and conducting extensive public consultations, the UCC was implemented in the state on January 27, 2025.
“This historic decision by the Chief Minister is a bold step towards social justice, gender equality, and equal rights,” the official statemen said.
“The UCC is in line with the spirit of Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. Its objective is to provide equal rights and respect to all citizens, especially women. Marriage, divorce, inheritance, live-in relationships, and related provisions are included in the UCC. Under this law, a minimum age for marriage has been prescribed for both men and women, and uniform and stringent provisions have been made for divorce and other procedures across all religions. The implementation of the UCC has freed women from harmful practices such as polygamy,” the official statement claimed.
Chief Minister Dhami said, “Implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand is a historic and courageous decision by the state government. The UCC is not aimed against any community, but rather to provide equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal respect to all citizens”.
