A shloka from Lord Krishna’s Bhagavad Gita will be recited along with its meaning in the morning assembly every day in the government schools of Uttarakhand.

After the recitation of the Shlokas, the students will also be taught about its scientific meaning in the prayer assembly.

After the government schools, all private schools in the state are likely to be asked to teach Gita shlokas to students, official sources said on Tuesday.

Apart from this, teachers have been asked to declare one shloka from the Gita as ‘Shloka of the Week’ and write it along with its meaning on the notice board.

Teachers have been asked to explain how the principles of the Bhagavad Gita develop human values, behaviour, leadership skills, decision-making ability, emotional balance and scientific thinking, said a top official of the state education department.

Students will also be told that the teachings of the Gita are based on Sankhya, psychology, logic, behavioural science and moral philosophy which are useful for the entire humanity from a secular point of view.

According to a government order issued by the education department, school principals have been asked to ensure at all level that these verses are not only taught to the students as a subject or reading material but these should also be reflected in their life and behaviour.

“It should be ensured at every level that the teachings and scientific approach of Shrimad Bhagwad Gita are used for character development of students, self-control, development of balanced approach towards life, personality development, development of scientific thinking and making them good citizens,” it said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in May had announced that the Bhagvad Gita will find a place in the school curriculum in Uttarakhand. Chairing a review meeting of the state education department at the Chief Minister’s camp office in Dehradun, the CM said children should study the Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta in the curriculum in schools.

On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana have also been included in the school curriculum and accordingly textbooks are proposed to be started from the coming academic session.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board Chairman Mufti Shamoon Qasmi has welcomed this initiative of the government to introduce Gita and Ramayana in schools . He said Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are both our ancestors and it is very important for every Indian to know about them.’
