Former world champion P V Sindhu suffered a three-game defeat to China’s Tokyo Olympics champion Chen Yu Fei in the women’s singles quarterfinal in the Asian Games in Japan on Sunday.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion, started strongly and took the opening game 21-11. Chen Yu Fei, however, fought back in the second game, winning it 21-18 to level the contest.
The Chinese shuttler then took control of the decider, winning 21-10 to seal her place in the semifinals.
Sindhu’s defeat brought the curtains down on India’s badminton campaign at the Games. She had carried much of India’s expectations in the women’s singles draw, having won an individual silver at the 2018 Asian Games.
Chen Yu Fei, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, produced a strong recovery after losing the opening game and maintained her composure through the deciding game to complete the 11-21, 21-18, 21-10 victory.
For Sindhu, the result marked the end of her Asian Games singles campaign.
