A woman traveler from Delhi had a horrendous experience when she escaped a rape attempt near the hill resort of Nainital on Thursday night, police said on Saturday.
The woman had boarded a taxi from Haldwani for Nainital when the driver tried to rape her in the midway. But she resisted the rape attempt and escaped from taxi into nearby jungles where she hid somewhere throughout the night under severe cold. When the woman was not found, the driver left the area with her mobile phone.
In the morning, a local woman spotted the dazed woman in a semi-unconscious condition and took her to the nearby police station where an FIR under section 64/309(6)/137 of the BNS was filed.
“When I heard about the incident, I immediately asked the police officials to nab the taxi driver,” said SSP Nainital Manjunath TC.
On the basis of CCTV camera and other surveillance devices, the taxi was identified and its driver Deepak Bora (39) was nabbed from Bhowali area in Nainital district.
“A medical test was conducted and all vital evidences have been collected,” said Manjunath TC. The Taxi (UK04TB 5500) has also been seized.
The SSP warned all the taxi owners to strictly adhere to all the norms like proper registration of their vehicles and verification of drivers with the police. “In this case, the verification of the taxi driver was not done,” said the SSP. An action against the taxi owner has also been initiated, he said.
