After strong 7.8 percent growth, now unemployment rate reduced from 6% to 3.2%

After strong GDP growth rate, the centre on Saturday claimed that the unemployment rate in India has declined from 6 per cent to 3.2 per cent as a result of various initiatives undertaken by the government.

Addressing the Rozgar Mela at D.G. Vaishnav College in Chennai, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan said flagship initiatives such as Make in India, Start-up India, Stand-up India and the MUDRA loan scheme had helped young people move beyond being job seekers and emerge as job creators due to which the unemployment rate has fallen from 6 percent to 3,2 percent.

He said the number of startups in the country had risen from around 400 in 2014 to more than 2.5 lakh, with a significant number of their founders being below 30 years of age.

Murugan’s remarks came amid strong economic growth, with India’s real GDP expanding 7.8 per cent year-on-year in the April-June 2026 quarter, according to official data. The growth was supported by strong investment and manufacturing activity.

He stressed the need for continuous learning, adoption of new technologies and regular upgrading of professional skills to remain relevant in a rapidly changing job market.

The minister also highlighted emerging opportunities for young people in frontier sectors such as space technology and atomic energy. He said women were increasingly participating in diverse fields, including space, defence, education, governance and public administration.

Murugan said more than 12.75 lakh appointment letters had so far been distributed through Rozgar Melas, reflecting the government’s focus on expanding employment opportunities for young people.

He distributed appointment letters to 285 newly recruited candidates selected for various Central government ministries, departments and organisations, including the Income Tax Department, Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, Airports Authority of India, Ministry of Defence, Department of Posts, JIPMER and Southern Railway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated through video conferencing in the 20th Rozgar Mela, organised at 45 locations across the country, and distributed appointment letters to more than 51,000 newly recruited youth.

Later, speaking to the media, Murugan said Navodaya schools in Tamil Nadu would provide students from underprivileged and economically weaker sections access to quality education. He said the schools would also facilitate primary education in students’ mother tongue and provide opportunities to learn various Indian languages.
