A 26-year-old woman pilgrim from Punjab died after falling into a deep gorge along the Chopta-Tungnath trekking route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, officials said on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Pooja Sahni, 26, a resident of Punjab.
According to State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials, information was received on Sunday evening that the woman had fallen into a gorge and gone missing. A search operation was subsequently launched to trace her.
During the operation, the SDRF team recovered her body on Monday from a gorge nearly 400 metres deep near Ravan Shila on the Chopta-Tungnath route.
The SDRF, along with the local police, retrieved the body from the gorge and carried it on a stretcher for around three kilometres along the trekking route to Chopta.
The body was subsequently handed over to the district police for further necessary legal proceedings.
