In view of the Dharali disaster, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday decided to ban new constructions and settlements at all vulnerable areas close to rivers and streams including their floodplains.

At a high-level meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence in Dehradun, Dhami said places sensitive to landslides, avalanches and other natural disasters in the mountainous areas of the state should be immediately identified so that vigilance can be maintained before any calamity.
He gave clear instructions that no new settlement or new construction work will be allowed at these identified sensitive sites.
The Chief Minister said that any kind of government or private construction work will be prohibited on the natural water sources, banks of rivers and streams in the state.
For this, clear guidelines should be issued to all the District Magistrates and their implementation should be regularly monitored. He warned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against the officers who violate these instructions. The Chief Minister said that preventive measures should be given priority to avoid disaster and concrete and effective steps should be taken keeping in mind the public interest in sensitive areas.
