The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Thursday gave Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar 48 hours to resign, warning that it would launch a nationwide agitation if he failed to step down.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, addressing a press conference in New Delhi, demanded Kumar’s resignation over what the party alleged were irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls. He said the CJP would continue its agitation until the CEC resigned.
“If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign within 48 hours, the Cockroach Janta Party will start a nationwide agitation,” Dipke said. He also warned of a “Jantar Mantar 2.0” protest in Delhi if the CEC did not step down.
The CJP’s ultimatum comes amid a controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reports of differences among Election Commissioners. A recent Indian Express report said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over a period of 10 months concerning decisions and orders related to voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, changes to Form 6 and the management of electoral-roll systems.
The CJP has also demanded that the ongoing SIR exercise be frozen and that the electoral roll be restored to its January 2025 status. The party has sought an independent inquiry into the Election Commission’s handling of electoral-roll decisions.
Dipke alleged that the Election Commission’s functioning under Kumar had undermined voters’ rights and questioned the manner in which electoral rolls were being revised. These are allegations made by the CJP and have not been established as facts.
The CJP’s announcement marks a further escalation of its campaign against the Election Commission, with the party now setting a specific 48-hour deadline before beginning what it described as a nationwide agitation.
