The BJP’s latest organisational reshuffle has given prominence to a number of experienced leaders, with Vinod Tawde, Sunil Bansal and Ram Madhav among those entrusted with key state responsibilities, while former Uttarakhand in-charge Dushyant Gautam has been left out of the new arrangement.
The BJP on Wednesday announced in-charges and co-in-charges for all 28 states and eight Union Territories, in a major organisational exercise ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Tawde, one of the party’s senior organisational leaders, has been appointed in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state. He will be assisted by Jagdish Patel, Medha Kulkarni, Pradeep Verma and Anant Ojha.
Sunil Bansal, regarded as one of the BJP’s key organisational strategists, has been retained as in-charge of Telangana and has also been given charge of West Bengal. Abhay Patil and Rekha Sharma will assist him in Telangana, while Lal Singh Arya, Rajendra Singh and Pinky Kushwaha have been appointed co-in-charges in West Bengal.
Ram Madhav, who recently returned to the BJP’s national organisational structure as a national vice-president, has been given charge of Uttarakhand as well as Tamil Nadu. In Uttarakhand, former national secretary Arvind Menon and Lok Sabha MP Bansuri Swaraj have been appointed co-in-charges.
Madhav’s appointment is particularly significant for Uttarakhand, which goes to the polls in 2027. The new team replaces the previous arrangement under Dushyant Gautam, who had been handling the state for an extended period.
Gautam, significantly, does not figure in the new list of state in-charges or co-in-charges. His tenure as Uttarakhand in-charge had come under political scrutiny after allegations surfaced in connection with the Ankita Bhandari murder case.
Gautam had denied the allegations and taken legal action against those he accused of linking him to the case. In January, the Delhi High Court directed the removal of social-media posts linking him to Bhandari’s murder, while subsequent legal proceedings also recorded that Gautam had not been named or charged by an investigating agency or court in connection with the murder.
The BJP’s latest appointments therefore mark a fresh organisational set-up in Uttarakhand, with Madhav taking charge as the party prepares for the next Assembly election.
