India’s retail inflation rises to 4.82% in August

India’s retail inflation rose to 4.82 per cent in August 2026, according to provisional data based on the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) released on Tuesday.

The year-on-year inflation rate in August, measured against August 2025, stood at 4.82 per cent. Inflation was higher in rural areas at 5.23 per cent, compared with 4.31 per cent in urban areas.

Food inflation also remained elevated during the month. The year-on-year inflation rate based on the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) was 5.95 per cent in August 2026.

Rural areas recorded food inflation of 6.13 per cent, while the corresponding rate for urban areas was 5.64 per cent.

The CPI, which tracks changes in prices of a basket of goods and services consumed by households, is a key indicator used to assess retail price pressures in the economy.
