A group of Hindu activists have damaged “Bulleh Shah” mazar in the hill resort of Mussoorie on Saturday night, police said on Sunday.
It was not yet clear whether the mazar, which is said to be 100 year old, belongs to the famous sufi Punjabi poet Bulleh Shah, whose popular mystic poetry became the symbol of oneness of god, divine love and social equality.
But a police statement acknowledged that the mazar belongs to Bulleh Shah.
On a complaint filed by Akram Khan, the police on Sunday registered an FIR stating that 25-30 unidentified people carrying hammers and iron rods barged into Wynberg Allen Estate in Mussoorie and damaged the mazar and also some religious books in order to foment communal tension.
Later, police said a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits. A video also purportedly showed the Hindu activists were raising slogans when they were damaging the mazar. The video could not be authenticated.
