Two cops taken into custody on charges of molestation at Kainchi Dham

Two Uttarakhand police officials were taken into custody and suspended on charges of sexual misconduct at Kainchi Dham area in Nainital district, a top police official said on Sunday.

SSP Nainital Manjunath T C said the two accused have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagdish Prasad of Kelakhera Police Station and Head Constable Jitendra Kumar of Gadarpur Police Station in Udham Singh Nagar district.

Preliminary inquiry found that the two cops, who were on duty at the Kainchi Dham foundation day, have allegedly molested a woman, who is the niece of the owner of the home state under the influence of alcohol on Saturday night.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that the two police officials molested her after consuming excessive alcohol. The woman’s family members and locals strongly raised objections and sought action against the two police cops.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, the SSP Nainital asked the top police officials to hold an inquiry into the incident. The preliminary inquiry found that the two accused policemen consumed excessive alcohol. A medical test and eyewitness account also confirmed the misconduct of the two police officials.

Later, both the policemen were taken into custody.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, an FIR has also been registered against the two at Bhawali police station. A departmental proceeding has also been initiated against them.

Besides the suspension, the process for the strictest departmental action, including dismissal from service, has been also been initiated, police sources said.

“We will not tolerate alcohol consumption or any criminal act especially during religious duty assignments as the law is equal for everybody, including police personnel,” said the SSP Nainital.
