Tension mounted after a local BJP leader was killed allegedly by a rival group belonging to different community prompting the authorities to deploy heavy police security in a Dehradun village in Uttarakhand, police said on Sunday.
Preliminary reports said members of one group allegedly attacked three brothers — Ashok Kumar, Vinod Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, sons of Bhagwat Prasad at Bairagiwala village in Vikasnagar area of Dehradun on Saturday. The injured were taken to Lehman Hospital where Vinod Kumar, a BJP leader, died during treatment.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has called for stern action against the culprits involved in the murder and warned that no one will be spared. A bulldozer action against the houses of the main accused in the Bairagiwala village has been initiated, police sources said.
Police said the two groups had been involved in a long-standing dispute, and arguments had escalated over the past few days regarding the release of water into fields.
Based on a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar, police registered a case against 12 accused and 30–40 unidentified persons.
Taking the case seriously, Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Dobal formed multiple police teams to investigate the matter. Four suspects — Razzaq, Salman, Javed and Shahbaz, all residents of Bairagiwala — have been arrested so far.
Police said raids are being conducted to apprehend the remaining accused. The SSP appealed to the people to maintain peace and assured that strict action would be taken against all those involved, with strong prosecution to ensure maximum punishment through the courts.
Meanwhile, Vikasnagar BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan visited the area and strongly criticized the local police officials for their alleged negligence in the incident. A video in this regard has gone viral.
