A failed relationship allegedly turned into a contract-killing plot in Dehradun, with police claiming that a 26-year-old woman hired a shooter for ₹5 lakh to kill her ex-boyfriend after he got engaged to another woman.

The dramatic case came to light after police arrested the alleged mastermind, identified as Malia Rahman, along with her associate Mohit Bhushan (25), while the alleged shooter Ankit Chauhan was injured in an encounter with police. Another accused, identified as Ankur, is absconding.

According to Dehradun Police, the victim, Satyam Kumar, a bank employee, was shot at in Badowala area by two motorcycle-borne youths in Dehradun on September 8 when he was travelling on a scooter with his cousin. The attackers allegedly overtook the scooter, stopped in front of it and opened fire, seriously injuring Satyam.

Police said that during investigations, CCTV footage and electronic surveillance helped identify the attackers. On September 11, police spotted two suspects riding a motorcycle without a number plate near Gorakhpur Chowk in Dehradun. When they tried to flee, the suspects allegedly abandoned the motorcycle near a tea-garden track and opened fire at the police team.

In retaliatory firing, Ankit Chauhan sustained a bullet injury in his leg, while Ankur escaped under cover of darkness. Police recovered a country-made .315-bore pistol, two spent cartridges and the motorcycle.

During interrogations, Chauhan told the police that he had been hired through Malia Rahman and her friend Mohin Bhushan to eliminate Satyam Kumar for ₹5 lakh. Police said Malia had allegedly paid him ₹1.20 lakh in advance and promised the remaining amount after the killing.

Police said Malia and Satyam had worked together at Ujjivan Bank, a small finance bank, in Haridwar and had been in a relationship for several years. She later married another man, but the relationship reportedly broke down while she remained in contact with Satyam.

Meanwhile, Satyam joined another bank in Dehradun in 2025 but continued to remain in contact with Malia. However, after getting engaged to another woman in February this year, he allegedly distanced himself from her and blocked her on social media.

Angry over the broken relationship and Satyam’s subsequent engagement, Malia hatched a plan to murder him by hiring two gangsters. She paid Rs 1.2 lakh in advance and provided Satyam’s photograph and showed the location of his workplace to the hired gangsters, who later shot at Satyam on September 8 at Badowala area. One of the shooters Ankit Chauhan was arrested following a police encounter on Friday night after he was spotted along with Ankur at Gorakhpur Chowk in Dehradun.

After being grilled by the police, Ankit Chauhan revealed the whole plot which led to the arrest of Malia and Mohit near ISBT late Friday night, police said. Efforts are underway to arrest Ankur, who is on the run.

The injured bank employee is undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said.
