Muslim cleric issues fatwa against Sara Ali Khan over Kedarnath visit

A Muslim cleric has issued a fatwa against Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan over her visit to the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand, saying that offering prayers at a Hindu shrine is against Islamic Sharia.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, said the actress was guilty under his interpretation of Sharia and should repent for her actions.

Razvi said several Muslim youths had asked him whether Islam permitted a Muslim to visit a temple and participate in its religious rituals. Responding to their questions, he said Islamic Sharia did not permit Muslim men or women to adopt the religious practices of other faiths or offer prayers at temples.

The cleric described Sara’s actions at Kedarnath as impermissible under the religious interpretation and urged her to seek forgiveness from Allah.

Sara visited the Kedarnath shrine on October 25, joining devotees waiting for darshan. The actress has visited the temple on several occasions and has publicly expressed her affection for Kedarnath. Sara was also in the lead role in the 2018 movie Kedarnath.

The latest controversy has brought renewed attention to the actress’s religious visits. Sara has also visited other prominent Hindu shrines, including the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain.

There was no immediate response from Sara Ali Khan to the cleric’s remarks.

A fatwa is a religious opinion or ruling issued by an Islamic scholar on a question of Islamic law; it is not, by itself, a state-issued legal order.
