After widespread protests, govt decided to file review petition in rape case

After widespread protests, the Uttarakhand government on Thursday decided to file a review petition in the heinous rape and murder of a little girl a decade ago after the acquittal of the main accused Akhtar Ali by the Supreme Court.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has Issued Instructions to present the case again in the Supreme Court with strong evidences and reputed lawyers.

Seven-year-old girl originally from Pithoragarh, was raped and murdered in Kathgodam area of Nainital district in 2014 when she was attending a marriage ceremony along with her family members.

Taking cognizance of the Supreme Court’s acquittal of the accused Ali in the case, the Chief Minister stated that the government is committed to punishing those who commit atrocities against the state’s daughters. The accused Ali was convicted by the lower court and the High Court, but for some reasons, the Supreme Court has acquitted him. Therefore, the Justice Department has been directed to file a review petition in the Supreme Court in this case and ensure a conviction with strong advocacy.

The Chief Minister stated that the government will vigorously fight this case, deploying the best legal team. The Chief Minister stated that those who commit such atrocities in Devbhoomi will not be spared.

The government stands firmly with the victim’s family in their fight for justice. He added that the government is continuously conducting verification campaigns in the state to identify such anti-social elements. The government will not allow any harm to the identity of Devbhoomi.

After the acquittal Ali, wide-spread protests took place in Pithoragarh district with people seeking justice and calling for capital punishment for the accused.
