Financial troubles and personal stress may have contributed to the death of Surendra Koli, who had been struggling to find work and had started selling tea from a rented kiosk just days before his death, said a police official involved in the investigations.
Police is still awaiting the postmortem report to establish the exact cause of death Koli, who was acquitted in the Nathari cases last year by the Supreme Court. Koli was found dead hanging from a ceiling fan in the kiosk at Saptsarovar Road in Haridwar on Friday.
The police said Koli had been under considerable stress and was facing difficult financial circumstances. He had reportedly borrowed Rs 5,000 to set up the tea kiosk and had started operating it only three or four days before his death.
The officer, however, said police were awaiting the postmortem report, expected within a day or two, to determine the cause of death. Some of Koli’s family members have raised questions about the circumstances of his death.
Family members of Koli have raised certain issues pertaining to his death. There were no visible signs of injury on Koli’s body, though some blood was noticed coming from his nose or mouth, the police official said.
Police have also examined CCTV footage from the area and found no suspicious activity, according to the officer.
The officer said Koli had been living under difficult circumstances and had changed four rooms within a short period while keeping his identity concealed. He allegedly faced difficulties in finding employment because he did not have police verification and wanted to conceal his identity.
