Two held in local BJP leader’s murder

The Uttarakhand police arrested two persons accused of killing local BJP leader Rohit Negi in Dehradun three days ago after an encounter in Purkaji, Uttar Pradesh, a top police officer said on Friday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Ajai Singh said Azhar Tyagi and his accomplice Ayush Kumar alias Sikandar were arrested on Thursday night after an encounter near at Purkaji area in Uttar Pradesh.

He said that during checking on Purkaji-Mangalore border of Uttarakhand, when the two accused were asked to stop when they were riding on a motorcycle, the duo started firing at the police and tried to escape. However, the police fired back and managed to arrest after a brief encounter. Tyagi and Sikander received gun wounds in the encounter and rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh.

Tyagi is a resident of Purkaji in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh while Sikander is a resident of Shamli in Uttar Pradesh.

Tyagi allegedly shot Negi at Manduwala in Dehradun when he was returning home with some of his friends. The bullet fired from the front pierced the glass of the car and hit Negi directly in the neck. Negi’s friends immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. Negi was the former Mandal president of BJP Yuva Morcha.

After Negi’s death, scores of youth BJP workers gathered in Dehradun and demanded arrest of the culprits.

According to preliminary investigation, Negi had a fight with Tyagi over the girlfriend of one of his friends, after which the latter threatened to teach former a lesson.
