Ending years of speculation about their relationship, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has wedded his long-time girl friend Nidhi Razdan in New Delhi, with the couple announcing their marriage through social media posts on Saturday.
While the 56-year-old National Conference leader described the occasion as the beginning of a “new journey”, 49 year old Nidhi, a journalist, chose a rather different way to confirm the news, posting: “It’s done bro.”
The marriage was solemnised on Friday, October 30, under the Special Marriage Act, with family members from both sides serving as witnesses, according to reports.
Omar shared four photographs of the couple on social media, tagging Nidhi and writing: “A new journey began yesterday.” Nidhi responded with her own post, accompanied by a ring emoji, putting an end to speculation that had surrounded the two for several years.
The wedding celebrations were held in Srinagar and New Delhi and were attended by close family members and relatives. Those present included Omar’s parents, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Mollie Abdullah, his three sisters, and Nidhi’s parents, veteran journalist M K Razdan and Sarla Razdan.
The wedding comes three months after the Supreme Court dissolved Omar’s marriage to Payal Abdullah by mutual consent, following a settlement between the estranged couple. They had married in 1994 and have two sons, Zahir and Zamir.
Omar and Payal had been living separately for several years, with their matrimonial dispute remaining before the courts for a prolonged period.
For Nidhi, a prominent television journalist and former executive editor and news anchor with NDTV, this is also her second marriage. She was earlier married to journalist and lyricist Neelesh Misra.
The wedding marks a new chapter in the personal lives of two familiar faces from Indian public life — one from politics and the other from television journalism.
