Rural Litigation & Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), a Dehradun-based NGO, on Wednesday organised a special Human Rights Day outreach program for the women and children at Mohand School which is dedicated to the education of underprivileged and Van Gujjar children.

The interactive session aimed to educate young students about essential human rights and legal protections through engaging role plays, games, and activities.

The volunteers of RLEK conducted a series of short, relatable role plays covering a wide range of everyday child rights and women rights’ issues. To strengthen the focus on women’s rights, the role plays also highlighted everyday challenges faced by women, such as the right to safety in public spaces, the right to complain without fear, and access to healthcare and legal support without discrimination.

The students watched the performances with great enthusiasm and actively interacted with the volunteers. The session became highly engaging as children asked thoughtful questions related to safety, legal aid, and their rights, reflecting a strong curiosity and eagerness to learn.

Following the awareness session, the women and children were invited to participate in a series of fun and educational activities. These included human-rights-themed games, quizzes where students illustrated messages on equality, safety, dignity, and freedom. The activities added vibrancy and joy to the day, allowing children to express their understanding of human rights through art and teamwork.

RLEK volunteers shared that conducting the programme on Human Rights Day, observed globally on 10th December every year, made the initiative even more meaningful. They emphasised that educating young minds especially those from marginalised communities creates the foundation for a more aware, empowered, and just society. These included Prohibition on Arresting Women After Sunset, Mandatory Provision of Bail for Children in Conflict with Law, Right to Emergency Medical Treatment Without Treatment, Right to Free Legal Aid for the Economically Weaker Sections, Illegality of Informal Adoption and Requirement of Legal Adoption Procedures and Prohibition on Circulating Photos or Videos Without Consent.

The day concluded with heartfelt interactions between the volunteers and the community reinforcing RLEK’s commitment to promoting legal awareness and strengthening human rights education among children from underserved communities.
