Varanasi’s Varuna River, which has shaped the geography and identity of the ancient city for centuries, is set to become the axis of a major new transport corridor aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the city.
The Union Cabinet-approved ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor, stretching 43.218 km, will connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road along the Varuna River, providing an alternative high-capacity route through the city.
The project, to be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), will predominantly comprise an elevated six/four-lane corridor, with flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads. It will also feature an iconic cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge.
The corridor is a key part of Varanasi’s larger decongestion plan, which seeks to improve traffic movement between highways, railway stations, the airport and major destinations in the city.
Cutting travel time
The new corridor is expected to provide faster access to Varanasi Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, besides improving connectivity to Ramnagar Port and areas along the Varuna.
Designed for speeds of 80-100 kmph, the corridor is expected to reduce the journey between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from about 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes.
The reduction in travel time could also lower vehicle operating costs and make the movement of passengers and freight more predictable, particularly on roads that currently carry a heavy mix of local, commercial and tourist traffic.
Relief during pilgrimage rush
For Varanasi, where traffic volumes rise sharply during festivals and peak pilgrimage seasons, the additional road capacity could be particularly significant.
The corridor is expected to provide smoother access to the city’s major religious and tourist destinations, including the ghats, the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
Varanasi’s status as a major educational centre could also benefit from improved connectivity. The corridor will provide better access to institutions such as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, potentially reducing travel times between educational hubs and residential areas.
A logistics link for eastern Uttar Pradesh
The project is not aimed solely at easing traffic within Varanasi. It is also expected to strengthen the city’s role as a regional logistics and economic hub.
Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor will improve connectivity to the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone, Chandauli Social Node and six major logistics nodes.
Improved integration between national highways, railway infrastructure and freight routes is expected to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, construction material and minerals between Varanasi, Chandauli and adjoining areas.
For a city whose growth has historically followed the Varuna and Ganga, the new corridor represents another chapter in that relationship — putting the Varuna at the centre of Varanasi’s effort to build a faster and more integrated urban transport network.
