One person was killed in a clash between two groups in Khatima area in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand sparking outrage among locals who set fire a shop, staged protests and blocked roads.
Police later resorted to lathi charge to control the situation arising out of the clash that occurred on Friday night, top police officials said on Saturday.
The violent clash broke out between two groups at the bus station complex during which 23-year-old Tushar Sharma was killed in stabbing.
Police said that two more persons were seriously injured in the incident and have been referred to a higher medical center due to their critical condition.
Upon hearing the news of Sharma’s death, enraged family members along with local residents held protests in the area. On the other hand, a group of people also set fire the alleged killers’ shop located in the bus station complex, causing tension in the area.
In protest against the incident, angry people also shut down the markets in Khatima and blocked roads with demonstrations. Seeing the tense situation, the police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesters sitting on the road.
Additional police force has been called in from surrounding areas and deployed in sensitive areas. Police said that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain law and order.
