A police sub-inspector was suspended on Tuesday a day after a girl was allegedly hacked to death in the broad daylight in Machchhi Bazar area in the heart of the city.
Pradyumna Negi, the incharge of Khudbara police chowki in Dehradun city was suspended after SSP Ajai Singh took serious view of the ghastly murder of the young girl.
Markets and business establishments were closed immediately in the entire Paltan Bazar, Tehsil Chowk and Machchhi Bazar areas in protest against the murder on Monday. The shopkeepers expressed their strong resentment on the murder asked the police authorities to heighten vigilance in the city.
Gunjan Shrivastva (22) was allegedly murdered by a known acquaintance moments after she parked her two-wheeler in the area. After the murder, the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead by doctors.
Eyewitnesses said a sharp chopper was used to slit the girl’s neck. After the attack, the girl collapsed. “The attack was very swift and everything happened in just seconds,” said a man who resides in the area.
The accused identified as Akash Kumar, who worked in the Machchhi Bazar market surrendered before the police, eyewitnesses said. However, police claimed the accused, who was already married, was arrested.
Significantly, shopkeepers said the girl’s family members had given a written complaint to the police against the accused, who had threatened to kill her following a breakup in the alleged extra-martial affair.
On Saturday night, a woman was allegedly shot dead by her boyfriend in the spiritual city of Rishikesh in Dehradun district on Saturday night.
Last week, a girl was allegedly murdered by her cousin at Vikasnagar area also in Dehradun district.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Congress President Ganesh Godiyal has slammed the state government over the rising crime against women in Dehradun and other areas of the hill state.
