The scene may look familiar with a Bollywood movie as it happened in full view of many people in one of the lanes of Machchhi Bazar in Dehradun where the young Gunjan Shrivastva (23) was brutally murdered in broad daylight on Monday (Feb 2).

The loud screams of Gunjan and her friend Payal for help fell on deaf ears as a large number of people witnessed the grisly murder but didn’t come forward for help.

Instead of rendering help, a couple of people started making videos of the whole gory scene ignoring the cries of Payal, who kept asking them for help when her friend Gunjan was being murdered.

As the new details of the ghastly murder emerged, police officials investigating the crime admitted that the incident was being watched by many people who stood few yards away as mute spectators.

Gunjan was allegedly murdered by a known acquaintance moments after she parked her two-wheeler in the area. After the murder, the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead by doctors.

Eyewitnesses said a sharp chopper was used to slit the girl’s neck. After the attack, the girl collapsed. “The attack was very swift and everything happened in just seconds,” said a man who lives close to the area where the murder took place.

The police said Payal, who lived where the scooter was park, rushed to help Gunjan after hearing her screams. But the accused identified as Akash Kumar alias Golu, who worked in the Machchhi Bazar market tried to attack her also. Payal got scared and started screaming for help but no one came forward.

“This is very sad that people remained mute spectators where the murder took place,” said Santokh Nagpal, a municipal corporator of the area.

The accused later surrendered before the police. However, police claimed the accused, who was already married, was arrested.

Significantly, shopkeepers said the girl’s family members had given a written complaint to the police against the accused, who had threatened to kill her following a breakup in the alleged one-sided affair.
