A 24-year-old woman from Nagpur, married to an Indian Air Force personnel, has accused an old classmate and his associates of drugging, raping, blackmailing and forcing her to undergo religious conversion, media reports said on Tuesday.
Two accused have been arrested, while efforts are on to trace a cleric allegedly linked to the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nagpur City Police, Singa Reddy Rushikesh told reporters.
The arrested men have been identified as Ayaaz Madare and Ameen Shaikh. A police team has been sent to Madhya Pradesh to locate a maulana who allegedly participated in the conversion rituals.
According to the FIR, the woman alleged that Ayaaz spiked her drink during a meeting at a hotel on February 8 this year. She claimed that when she regained consciousness, he had recorded objectionable photographs and videos of her. The accused allegedly threatened to send the material to her husband and upload it on social media unless she complied with his demands.
The woman alleged that she was repeatedly sexually assaulted and extorted of nearly Rs 4 lakh over the following months.
The case has attracted widespread attention after a video surfaced online showing the woman crying and pleading, “Chhodo mujhe” (let me go), while a man allegedly holds her hands and chants religious verses. Investigators are examining the footage, which the complainant claims was recorded during a ritual linked to her forced conversion.
In her complaint, the woman also alleged that the accused made her consume a liquid from a bottle and then performed rituals he described as hypnosis or black magic. She claimed the acts were followed by sexual assault and pressure to convert her religion.
Police have registered a case under charges of rape, extortion, criminal intimidation and provisions related to unlawful religious conversion. Officials said all allegations are being thoroughly investigated and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the probe.
