A native of Nainital in Uttarakhand, Pant who was the captain of the Russian oil tanker, was arrested after the vessel was intercepted by British armed forces while passing through the English Channel on its way from Russia violating the international sanctions. Pant’s wife Ritu has appealed to the Indian government to help secure his safe return.
On the passionate plea of Ritu, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to launch efforts for securing the release of Pant.
Meanwhile in England, District Judge David Robinson had sent the case for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Bournemouth Crown Court on July 16 and remanded Pant in custody until then.
According to an official statement issued by the Uttarakhand government, the High Commission has kept the Chief Minister informed about the latest developments in the case and the diplomatic assistance being extended to Pant.

The High Commission is also maintaining close coordination with Pant’s wife, his employer, Energios Maritime Private Limited, his legal representatives and other stakeholders involved in the case. According to the statement, the company has assured the High Commission that it will provide Captain Pant with legal assistance and extend all necessary support to his family during the legal proceedings.
