Spain full of energy and enthusiasm were crowned FIFA World Cup champions after defeating listless Argentina 1-0 in a one-sided final at New Jersey, ending Lionel Messi’s dream of bowing out with back-to-back World Cup titles.
After squandering chance after chance and remaining goalless despite 10 attempts during regulation time, Spain finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute of extra time when Ferran Torres found the back of the net, putting La Roja on the brink of World Cup glory against a 10-man defending champions. Argentina, who had thrilled fans with a series of spirited performances en route to the final, looked unusually subdued. The South Americans struggled to build meaningful attacks and rarely tested the Spanish goalkeeper. Messi, playing what is widely expected to be his final World Cup match, was closely marked every time he touched the ball and failed to produce the moments of magic that had carried Argentina through the knockout stages.
Unlike England’s pathetic display in the final moments despite taking 1-0 lead in the semifinal, Spain remained disciplined after taking the lead, refusing to sit back despite Argentina’s desperate attempts to find an equaliser. Their midfield continued to dominate possession, forcing the defending champions into mistakes and preventing them from gaining any momentum.
The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players, coaching staff and thousands of travelling supporters, who witnessed their team complete an outstanding World Cup campaign. Spain’s triumph was built on attacking football, tactical discipline and remarkable consistency throughout the tournament.
For Argentina, the defeat brought an emotional end to an inspiring campaign. Having overcome several difficult knockout matches, including a memorable semi-final victory over England, they entered the final hoping to defend the title they had won four years ago. However, they found no answer to Spain’s superior organisation and relentless pressing.
While Argentina left the tournament with heads held high after another memorable World Cup run, the night belonged entirely to Spain. The victory marked the return of La Roja to the summit of world football and reaffirmed their status among the game’s elite, as they celebrated a deserved World Cup triumph after outclassing the reigning champions in the biggest match of them all.
