Suneil Anand, actor, filmmaker and the only son of legendary Bollywood actor Dev Anand and actress Kalpana Kartik, passed away in London following a heart attack. He was 70. His family confirmed that he died on July 26 and requested privacy during this difficult time.
In a striking coincidence, both Dev Anand and his son Suneil Anand died in London, nearly 15 years apart, linking the final chapter of their lives to the same city.
The news was confirmed by Suneil’s niece, Gina Narang, who, in a statement on behalf of the Anand family, said, “With heavy hearts, our family mourns the passing of Suneil Anand. We are comforted by the outpouring of love, prayers and support, for which we are truly grateful. We kindly request privacy as we navigate this difficult time together.”
Born to one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated couples, Suneil Anand attempted to carry forward the family’s cinematic legacy. Dev Anand launched his son in “Anand Aur Anand” (1984), a film that also featured the legendary actor himself. Although the film generated considerable expectations, it failed at the box office, and Suneil never achieved the stardom that defined his father’s illustrious career. He later appeared in films such as “Car Thief”, “Main Tere Liye” and “Master”, while also contributing behind the scenes as a filmmaker and taking care of the family’s banner, Navketan Films.
Despite maintaining a relatively low public profile in later years, Suneil remained closely associated with preserving Dev Anand’s cinematic legacy. Friends and admirers often described him as a private individual who devoted himself to keeping alive the memory of one of Indian cinema’s greatest legends.
The passing of Suneil Anand marks another emotional chapter for the Anand family. Dev Anand, one of Indian cinema’s evergreen stars and recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, died in London in December 2011. With Suneil’s demise, Bollywood has bid farewell to another member of one of its most influential film families.
