With the Uttarakhand government adopting zero tolerance against the love jihad, the police on Friday arrested Ibrahim (27) for allegedly sexually abusing a minor girl at Lalkaun area in the district by changing his identity.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim at Lalkuan police station, SSP Nainital Manjunath T C constituted a police team headed by SP Haldwani Manoj Katyal to nab the culprit. After several raids, Ibrahim was arrested from lalkaun area on Friday, Manjunath said.
“This action marks a strong crackdown under the zero-tolerance policy against religious conversion, championed by our Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ji,” said Manjunath.
Giving details, the SSP said the victim has lodged a written complaint at the Lalkuan Police Station stating that she was contacted via Instagram through a fake ID which featured a girl’s photograph. During their interactions, the accused extracted personal details to obtain her mobile number and subsequently continued to communicate with her over the phone.
Later, the accused allegedly sexually abused the victim and pressured her to convert her religion. When she resisted, he threatened to create obscene videos using AI technology and circulating them on social media. The victim was a minor, the SSP said.
Subsequently, a case under various sections of the BNS and POCSO Act was registered at the Lalkuan Police Station against Ibrahim. Based on various evidences, Section 3(1)/5(1) of the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2022 was also added to the case.
After gathering various evidences based on police surveillances and eyewitness accounts, the accused was arrested from the Lalkuan area on May 1, 2026, the SSP said.
