The situation in the hill resort of Nainital in Uttarakhand was tense but under control on Thursday after an unruly mob ransacked shops belonging to a particular community last night in the wake of allegations that a 12 year old girl was raped repeatedly.
As the angry people backed by leaders of some Hindu organizations began ransacking the shops, police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them. Some people were also injured in the lathicharge.
Later, top police officials said Usman, who is being accused of raping the girl repeatedly has been arrested, SP Nainital Jagdish Chandra said. An FIR on rape charges has been lodged against Usman, an elderly man.
The police patrol in the town has been intensified in the wake of the tense situation. Most of the schools and shops remained closed on Thursday in the wake of the tension in the town.
Meanwhile, SSP Prahalad Singh Meena said the tourists can come to Nainital as the situation was normal now.
On the other hand, Usman has been remanded to 14 days judicial custody.
