On the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, District Magistrate Uttarkashi Prashant Arya on Thursday inspected the temporary lake which has been formed in Bhagirathi river in Harshil area.

The lake was formed after the debris and boulders of the Khirgad flash floods blocked the flow of the river after the Aug 5 Dharali disaster.

The District Magistrate said that at present the river water is flowing smoothly from the mouth of the lake, due to which there is no immediate danger. However, manual work to open the lake is being done on war-footing to remove the debris obstructing the flow of the river, Arya said.

Due to the swampy site, deployment of heavy machines is not possible, due to which continuous cleaning work is being done by the administration with the help of local resources and workers, he said.

The District Magistrate, while instructing the officials, said that while maintaining vigilant surveillance in the area, reports should be submitted from time to time and prior preparation should be ensured to deal with any emergency.

As the Bhagirarthi river is in spate, efforts are on to open the lake by the specialized teams of Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN) and the state Irrigation Department. Personnel of SDRF are also helping.
