Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after they were evicted from a sit-in protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence during a march over the alleged police action against students.
“We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability or does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament. PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth,” Rahul Gandhi said on social media.
The opposition leaders, accompanied by MPs from the INDIA bloc, had marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence demanding accountability from the Centre over what they described as the “brutalities” against students during Sunday’s protest in the national capital. However, security personnel stopped the march before it could reach the high-security zone around the Prime Minister’s residence.
As the leaders refused to disperse, they staged a sit-in on the road, raising slogans against the BJP-led government and demanding a discussion on the issue in Parliament. A heavy deployment of Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel remained in place to prevent the protesters from moving ahead. Rahul Gandhi also demanded the resignation of PM Modi on the issue.
After the protest continued for some time, police personnel removed Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav from the protest site and detained them along with several other opposition MPs and leaders. They were later taken away in police vehicles from the area.
Before being detained, Rahul Gandhi accused the Centre of trying to suppress the voices of students and avoiding accountability. In a social media post, he said the opposition had marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to seek answers for the alleged excesses committed against young students.
“The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability nor does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament. PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth,” Gandhi said.
The Congress alleged that the police action reflected the government’s unwillingness to engage with the concerns of students and the opposition. Party leaders maintained that the protest was peaceful and aimed at drawing attention to issues affecting the country’s youth.
There was no immediate official response from the Centre to Rahul Gandhi’s demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The incident further escalated the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition, with the issue expected to resonate both inside and outside Parliament in the coming days.
