Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s bid on Saturday to break legendary Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in a test series as a captain was unsuccessful after he was out at 11 in the second innings of the last test match against England at Oval.

Gill on Thursday broke legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 runs record against West Indies in 1978-79 as captain.

Gill also failed to break another record set by Gavaskar of scoring 774 runs by an Indian batter in any series. Gavaskar scored 774 runs, which is the highest by an Indian, was also against West Indies in 1971.

Gill was 57 runs away from Bradman’s 89 year old record which was made during the 1936-37 Ashes series when he was out at 11 after being trapped LBW by Gus Atkinson. Gill amassed 754 runs in the current five test series which is a record by an Indian captain with an average of 75.40 that include four centuries and a highest of 269. Gill now holds the second most runs in a test series by an Indian behind only Gavaskar’s 774.
