Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is a restless man these days. He is mainly worried about a series of disasters that had struck the hilly areas of Garhwal region Since Aug 5 when the first catastrophe hit Dharali.

Dhami has been closely monitoring the difficult situation arising out of horrendous calamities. In a short span of 18 days, three big disasters Dharali, Syanachatti and Tharali have left a big trail of death and destruction in the hill state. Dhami understands that a small mistake can take the shape of a potential political bomb as all his political adversaries are keeping a close watch on him.

A video of Dhami in Tharali where he is trying to pacify the affected people has already gone viral on social media.

The removal of Nityanand Swami, B C Khanduri, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Trivendra Singh Rawat and Tirath Singh Rawat from the posts of CM in the past without assigning any valid reason are glaring examples in the ruling BJP in Uttarakhand where the top job is not considered very safe. Only N D Tiwari (Congress) was able to complete his full five-year term because of his big political stature.

And now Dhami is leaving nothing to chance as he looks confident to equal the record set by Tiwari. If he completes his full five-year term then he will become the longest serving CM in the hill state. Dhami became CM on July 4, 2021 after Tirath Singh Rawat was removed. In 2022, he led BJP to a handsome victory in the assembly elections.

Days after visiting Tharali, Dhami on Wednesday flew to the disaster-hit Syanachatti on the Yamunotri highway in Uttarkashi district, his third such trip in less than a fortnight. He has also travelled to Pauri where the impact of the disaster was much less.

After taking a stock of the situation, Dhami also met the disaster affected people in Syanachatti which was hit by flash floods last week that also created a temporary lake in the area submerging many houses and hotels. A large number of people, mostly women, turned up to listen to the CM’s speech at Syanachatti.

Dhami told the people that his government was firmly standing with them in the hour of crisis. The government has already announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kins of those killed in the disasters and also an equal amount for the damaged houses.

Significantly, the governments in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have not yet announced any compensation so far. Uttarakhand has taken a lead over the two disaster afflicted states – Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir.

Commenting on Dhami, a top BJP leader said Dhami would shortly expand his cabinet and also take the BJP to victory in 2027.
