They may be speaking at different places on different issues but the timing of statements by some BJP and Congress leaders has been chosen carefully as if they are speaking in one voice against Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Interestingly, the voices of dissent have also surfaced at a time when Dhami is expected to expand his cabinet shortly. There is political rider in the expansion as Dhami says a final nod from the BJP high command is necessary.

After Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat claimed that the ruling BJP in Uttarakhand received an amount of Rs 30 crore as donation from the mining sector that include Rs one crore on his side, former chief minister and BJP leader Trivendra Singh Rawat sought to bring clarity on the issue saying the actual amount was Rs 27 crore which was deposited in banks during his tenure as Chief Minister of the hill state.

But when Rawat, who is also Haridwar MP, was giving his explanation in a press conference on the donation issue recently, he also cautioned the government against any action that might damage the image of the ruling BJP. Rawat, who led a campaign against the then Chief Minister B C Khanduri in 2008-09, also suggested that there is a need for reforms in some cases in the state.

Rawat pointed out that in certain cases the police have not filed the FIR even after eight months. Rawat’s statement has also apparently led to certain rumors in the social media on the possibility of a change of guard in Uttarakhand. On Saturday night, Uttarakhand police issued a statement saying strong action would be taken against any person who spread rumors against Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who is busy these days in view of a series of disasters striking the hill state.

After Rawat’s statement in the media, another top BJP leader and former cabinet minister Bishan Singh Chuphal alleged that some ministerial rank posts were given to incompetent politicians in Pithoragarh district. Chuphal, who is BJP MLA from Didihaat in the district, claimed that these politicians were now creating hurdles in the developmental works being carried out by him in his constituency. When contacted, Chuphal said the matter has been brought before state BJP President Mahendra Bhatt.

Arvind Pandey, a BJP MLA from Gadarpur, has also claimed that some people were indulging in rampant mining in rivers which in turn was threatening to inundate low-lying areas in the Udham Singh Nagar district.

However, top BJP leaders were not available for comments on these issues. But state BJP spokesperson Suresh Joshi appealed to all the BJP leaders to rake up the issue before proper party fora.
