Nearly 1,296 people have lost their lives since the year 2000 in Uttarakhand in the wild animal attacks which are causing havoc.

Replying to a question in the state assembly on Tuesday, Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal said the government is making continuous efforts to prevent human-wildlife conflict, including the formation of quick response teams at the forest division level, frequent patrolling by departmental staff, animal rescue using cages and tranquilizers, public awareness campaigns, clearing bushes around villages, bio-fencing, and efforts to protect wildlife habitats. A total of 6624 people were also injured in the attacks during the period, he said.

Uniyal was responding to a question posed by BJP member Brij Bhushan Gairola during the ongoing budget session in the state’s summer capital Gaisain.

Uniyal said the state government is also conducting a study by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on the changing behaviour of Bears whose attacks have spiked in Uttarakhand since September 2025.

Leopards, tigers, elephants and bears are considered most dangerous for such attacks on humans in Uttarakhand.
