The Uttarakhand Police in a major breakthrough in Udhamsingh Nagar district has seized over one million NCERT textbooks, a police statement said on Tuesday.
On the night of March 14, 2026, a police team intercepted and inspected a Canter vehicle near Anandam Resort in Rudrapur town. The driver informed the officers that the vehicle was transporting books from Meerut.
During the verification of documents, the driver was not having any e-way bill. Some discrepancies found in the submitted invoices also raised suspicions.
Upon inspection, an extremely large quantity of NCERT textbooks was found inside the Canter. The driver also led the police to the associated warehouse. Based on these suspicions, officials from the Education Department were summoned to the scene. After the verification, the books were found fake.
Subsequently, the warehouse was also inspected where approximately one million (10 lakh) books were found. The investigation revealed that the warehouse owner was Rajesh Kumar Jain, although the premises had been leased to an individual named Sandeep.
An inspection team from NCERT, New Delhi, examined the quality of the books and concluded that the printing, paper quality, binding, and cover designs did not meet the prescribed standards. Furthermore, by fraudulently altering the NCERT logo—replacing “NCERT” with “ACERT”—the books were being printed, distributed, and stored with the specific intent of misleading the people.
Following the confirmation by the NCERT team from Delhi that the books were indeed counterfeit, a case was registered last night at Kotwali Rudrapur under relevant sections of the law; the investigation into this matter is currently underway.
Deepam Seth, Director General of Police (DGP), Uttarakhand, has lauded the police team for this exemplary work and has announced a cash reward of ₹20,000 to recognize their efforts.
